I am continuing a series for our newsletter to include a leadership topic along with passing along news in the nursing community. I wanted to focus on the positive in nursing and leadership. Subscribe to receive notification when our newsletter comes out. We publish twice a month. Oops! I have taken most of the summer off due to family obligations and working on my book. I am very glad to be back to publish this series.
Do you often feel like there isn’t enough time in the day to get all the tasks demanded of you completed? Are you constantly saying, “There’s too much to do!” or “I need a break!”? I can feel that way sometimes and I bet so can you. What I have discovered is that time is relative. What do I mean? We choose how we spend our time. I am writing this article, sitting in my office on a Saturday afternoon, in peace and quiet. My day was supposed to start off with a workout, then a massage, and then teaching a TB class. Well, I overslept, my massage therapist canceled due to illness, and my student never showed up. (That is another long boring story). Was my time wasted? No. I got more sleep which my body told me I needed after a stressful day seeing patients the day before with a long shift. I was able to get into the studio and edit my latest podcast episode for The Nurse Shark Academy Show (https://www.thenursesharkacademy.biz/podcast) earlier than expected, which then allowed me to promote my previous episode again, and then schedule my promotion for the upcoming episode. This inspired me to write another blog post for my newsletter and to publish it so I could send out promotions for that as well. My time was reclaimed and repurposed. I got to choose how I spent my time. Do you see how time is relative? I could get bent of shape when my plans changed (and believe me, the old me would have had a meltdown), but I instead understood that this was an opportunity to focus on a project that had to be done and now, I get to enjoy my free time that much sooner.
We get to choose our priorities. I like to block my calendar for important tasks and events. I set aside time to get a project under way, building in the steps that need to be taken. I make sure that I also prioritize time with my family and for my self-care. Because I feel like the word “block” seems to be negative and constricts my creativity, instead, I may set aside some free time in my calendar so no one creeps onto my schedule and I block that time as “Glorious Purpose.” Yes, I was watching the Loki series when I coined this phrase but it works because now, I am thinking more expansively. What can I accomplish during this time of Glorious Purpose? Am I going to listen to a podcast, finally listen to that training I have been trying to finish, or am I going to be sailing down I-69 listening to my favorite tunes and singing loudly with the radio? I don’t know but that time lends itself to great possibilities. It could be that I get invited to dinner with a friend or I decide to take in a movie with my husband. Anything is possible during the time of Glorious Purpose. How are you using time to your advantage? How can you redeem your time? What choices are lying in front of you?
Nursing News
A recent article highlighted the fact that more nurses are now leaving the profession to do other things. Issues such as short staffing, chaotic working conditions, caps on pay, and the increased violence in the workplace are leading health care workers to consider other options.
