The Power of One

The number one in gold letters
No. 1

I am starting a series for our newsletter to include a leadership topic along with passing along news in the nursing community. I wanted to focus on the positive in nursing and leadership. I was struck by the thought that all it takes for massive results is to take one action and then build on from there. What is one thing you can do to make a step forward? What is one thing that will make a difference in your life? What is that one thing you can do to grow your business?

I think we underestimate the power of one. It starts with making a choice. You can decide today that you are going to move toward your destiny. You get to choose your path. Are you ready to take that one step that moves you further to your goal? Do you need to fill out that job application? How about you pick up the phone and call that prospective client? Can you write one chapter in your book?

This is the Power of One. One small, imperfect step forward to gain momentum. You have to make the decision with an unshakable belief that you can be and do what you purpose in your heart. Have a big dream? What is one action you can take to get one step closer to turning your dream into a reality? Are you going to move forward or are you going to stand still?

That one step can be a small one or giant leap. Next month, I will celebrate the one year mark for our podcast, The Nurse Shark Academy Show. Looking back, I realized that it was several small steps which lead to my biggest leap of starting the podcast. It started with learning how to use Canva, being the guest on other podcasts, researching starting podcast, paying someone for logo, trademarking that logo, launching The Nurse Shark Academy coaching program, and then ultimately, taking that leap to record my very first episode. One step lead to another step, then to another step. Pretty soon I was off and running and just recently released our 24th episode. Not bad for the first season.

What are your big goals for the rest of 2023? What is one action you can take to make it happen?

Woman at computer looking stressed
Depression

Trigger Warning: This article contains a sensitive topic. Stop here if you do not wish to continue.

By now, many have heard the tragic story of Tristin Kate Smith, an ER nurse who died by suicide after penning a note entitled, “A letter to my abuser.” These events are becoming all too common and swept under the rug. The need for mental health care is apparent, yet the stigma remains that if you are a healthcare worker, you should have it all together. The current data for the US sites 16 per 100,000 of registered nurses die by suicide as compared to the national average of non-healthcare workers. This is not just a US phenomenon. An article by the BBC, reports a student nurse used her school computer to look up websites for suicide before she took her life. Nursing Times report that there was a 98% increase in calls to their crisis line for healthcare workers of nursing staff reporting suicidal thoughts between January and October of 2023. In India, nursing students took to the streets in protest after a fellow student attempted suicide, citing ill management and poor pay as stressors. There are more stories from around the globe. My question is, when are governments and health care systems going to start paying attention? How many more stories will there be? If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, ask for help. Call 988 or 1-800-273-8255 (TALK). Your employer may also have EAP services available to you.
