The Power of Be-attitudes: BE CALM

I am starting a new series for our newsletter to include a leadership topic along with passing along news in the nursing community. This series I am focusing on our Be-Attitudes, those attitudes we need to cultivate to win business and life. I wanted to focus on the positive in nursing and leadership. Subscribe to receive notification when our newsletter comes out. We publish twice a month.

January is about over. We have had the turkey, celebrated the new year with all its’ promises, and now we are settling in for our first quarter. I don’t know about you, but with me, January has been a challenge. Our state had record low temperatures only to have the boiler go out in my office building. I started the year off with the Kickstart Challenge, a women’s empowerment summit, and the Comeback Champions summit. Season 2 of The Nurse Shark Academy show is underway. I have had frozen pipes, stopped up sinks, and lost keys. This is life. Things happen. We have the good and the “bad”. It is how you choose to respond that makes all the difference.

Be calm. It is too easy to fall into the trap of panic. There are forces out there that will excite us and confuse us. Inflation, low wages, increased gas prices, it all happens to everyone. I think of Chicken Little who was concerned that the sky was falling and how many news stories are designed to convince us that that the end is near? I am not saying bury your head nor am I saying don’t believe the facts. What I am saying is that given the facts, what are you going to do about it? Don’t get caught up in the fear mongering and doomsday predictions. Focus on what is in front of you.

“Worry never accomplishes anything. When you have a problem, it is best to concentrate on the solution to that problem, not the problem itself.” – Thomas D. Willhite

I recently had a conversation with a nurse who wants to propose a new nursing model to bring solutions to the problems in healthcare. It is a very forward-thinking model. She is solution oriented. She has identified the problem and is now ready to present the solution.

“There are always going to be obstacles. I think the bigger your aspirations, the larger the obstacles. “-Kathryn Minshew

We don’t have to panic. We know that we are going to have some challenges as we strive to create a better society. Perhaps in your business a customer brings a new problem to light. Do you consider this a problem or an opportunity? Successful leaders face each challenge calmly and understand the difference between being reactive and proactive. Challenges are often temporary setbacks. The first battle is the battle of our minds. Take a deep breath. Remember, you got this! You will find a way to get through this test. Approach each challenge as exercise to go higher. We discover a lot about ourselves in how we respond to adversity. By steading your nerves, taking a step back, and re-evaluating the situation, a solution will often emerge.

Your Be-attitude: BE CALM.
